Intended to take you and your client farther and into deeper clinical insights with talk therapy, Adjunct EMDR therapy refers to the use of Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) as a complementary treatment in conjunction with your primary form of psychotherapy. In this context, adjunct means that EMDR is not the main or standalone treatment but is integrated to enhance or support the effectiveness of another therapeutic approach.

Kidding, I don't mean actually facilitating it untrained-- I mean - how about outsourcing an EMDR therapist to help wade through the roots of the particular weeds that are getting in the way of your long term work together.

Key Aspects of Adjunct EMDR Therapy:

  • Complementary to Other Therapies: Adjunct EMDR may be used alongside narrative, internal family systems, psychodynamic therapy, or other therapeutic modalities. For example, a therapist might use an outsourced EMDR to help process trauma and present day triggers in order to deepen access into broader mental, emotional or behavioral issues through talk therapy.

  • Focus on Specific Issues: Often, EMDR is integrated to target particular issues like trauma experiences, PTSD symptoms, or unresolved emotional pain. The primary therapy may address a more holistic and overall positive mental health outcomes.

  • Time-Limited and Structured: EMDR sessions can be incorporated for a certain number of sessions or as needed, depending on the primary therapist's specific goals. The idea is to use EMDR for the rapid processing of specific memories or symptoms while continuing the broader therapeutic work.

  • Specialized Application: A therapist who uses EMDR in an adjunct capacity often has specific training in EMDR and applies it when the client is ready or when they believe it will provide significant benefits for trauma resolution.

In sum, adjunct EMDR sessions is another tool used you can reach for to enhance and improve the overall treatment outcomes for your client, by integrating EMDR into an existing therapeutic treatment plan. This will help to address the specific traumatic or emotional issues, and their corresponding present day activators effectively, in a manner which desensitizes the trauma cue and improves healing goals.
